Using the Zune HD in the UK

I recently picked up a couple of Zune HD’s while on a trip to the US.  There are plenty of reviews out there so this is not one of those, instead, and since the Zune HD has not been released in the UK yet, I thought it would be useful to outline how the device works in the UK.  So without further adieu, here are the burning questions that were on my mind as I played with the device on the flight back, and the answers both my son (who has the other one) and I discovered as we played with them yesterday.

Getting the Marketplace in the UK on the Desktop

Since the Zune HD is not available in the UK, there is no marketplace for UK users right?  Not quite, although it takes a bit of manipulation, and you can’t buy anything (though I have some thoughts on how to do that (read on…)!  However even without purchases there is still plenty of value in having the marketplace enabled because you get all the extra music discovery features of pictures, bios, discography and related music, and without the marketplace you can’t get the apps.

Initially I thought I would need to set this up in the US which is what I did, however on my return I managed to get the same result on my son’s laptop.

It’s pretty simple just set you regional settings in Windows to US before you start the Zune software and hey presto!

Setting you regional settings back to UK will give you the following Zune menu’s

If you want to download anything (such as the apps) you also seem to need to set up a Windows Live Id with a US location – this worked fine for me.

Getting the Marketplace on your Zune HD

If you ran the setup for your Zune HD before changing the O/S to US you will not get the marketplace on the device.  To sort this out you will need to re-install the software on the device while you have Windows set to US region.  You can reset the device (you won’t lose any content but it won’t be associated with your computer anymore) by turning it off, then holding down the Power and Media button (the one on the side) for 15 seconds.  More great tips like this are here by the way (anythingbutipod.com)

Buying things from Marketplace in the UK

You are not going to be able to buy anything from the marketplace unless you have a valid US credit card and address, which I guess is unlikely for most people (certainly me).  However I am wondering if you could buy points from Xbox live with a the Live ID account you created with a US address, or perhaps buy an Xbox Points card from a local store or Amazon and use that?  Haven’t tried that yet, but would be interested if anyone gets it to succeed?

Does the HD Radio work in the UK?

Yes it works fine as a normal FM radio though the stations that are found have strange four letter names (e.g. Radio 1 is CFJM Classical!).  When the station is playing the RDS name will come through and display on the screen as well as other program information if it is available, but the saved names is always the four letter one (even though I changed the settings > radio > to Europe). DAB is not going to work by the way.

Any Other Questions?

If you are thinking of getting a Zune HD for use in the UK and have a question, feel free to ask me – I’d be happy to try it out on the device and let you know via this blog entry…

Cheers

Ian

Purchasing will no longer work, whether you have a US Credit Card and Address or not.

When you attempt to download I believe its checking the IP address and I receive a "not available in your region" message.
This was when trying to download a free video of some pre Heroes Season 4 thing.

All of my other regional settings are fine and work and i've even patched the need for them using the Unlock the Marketplace fix:

Thanks Ian. Good info about the UK experience. I've had Zunes before and am well versed in the get-arounds but this is still a reassuring post!

Picking up my Zune HD 32GB next week in New York.

This site isn't verified personally by me but might be worth a look:

Hey Ian, thanks for the info. I got onto the marketplace but can't really do much, better than nothing and I like how a slideshow occurs when you view your music in the Now Playing area, nice feature.

I was wondering if you were able to access the apps at all? I'm considering importing a Zune HD from the US to Northern Ireland but if I can't get the apps that's a big negative.

Hi Kelvin,

I do have the apps installed, however I downloaded them when in the states. Having said that I just deleted the calculator, signed in with a US live account (with my system settings region set to US) and was able to re-download it so I guess the answer is yes - you can get the apps ;-)

So, if I were to import a Zune HD, I could sign up with a US hotmail/live account and use that to download apps?

I'm sold on the Zune HD 32GB, I'm just not sure if I should buy one off ebay.co.uk (US Power seller, wordwide shipping) comes to around £238 including $38 shipping.

Zunethings are selling them next week for £249.99 + £5 shipping, which is steep, and they operate under the umbrella of a company that likes to scam it's customers "take money and take forever to post little support contact" etc.

What would you do personally? I would love to travel to the states but I barely have enough to cover the Zune HD it's self! :P

Hi Kelvin,

Tough for me to make that call - you are paying well over the odds from the price I paid (about £135 fo 16GB) but who knows what price they will sell them when (if) they come to the uk anyway.

If you can, it may be worth waiting a few months though, and see if they do bring them to the uk - should be a better deal all round because you will have the marketplace/zune pass service enabled, maybe DAB radio (who knows?) and of course support if it breaks. I guess zune originals may also be available. I would expect that to happen before xmas if it is going to happen at all; there may even be an annoucement around the Xbox live video service improvement in October - but I wouldn't hold my breath too much...

You

I ended up buying one off a power seller on ebay, shipping from London next day delivery for £220, isn't bad and less time to wait. Around the same price if not less for an Ipod Touch.

I'd imagine when they do bring Zune to UK, all current Zunes & HD's will work fine, it would be odd not to. Flash support coming for Tegra and mobile based devices next year, meaning Zune HD gets flash!

How are you finding yours so far Ian? Pros & Cons?

Hi Kelvin,

Find the device really nice to use, as well as the desktop software. Most people are very impressed when they see it in action - certainly puts Winmo 6.5 to shame!

Hi Ian

So. does the marketplace still work with the "workaround" or not... some people here seem to think not? I neeeeeed one of these and the marketplace working would be a boost. I cant see them launching in the UK for a long time... if at all.

No it loses the marketplace once you go back to uk setting, but you can switch between the two at will (no reboot required in Windows 7/vista - not sure about xp)
